Press Conference Highlights Antimicrobial Resistance Crisis and Importance of Education

TUMS press conference on antimicrobial resistance highlights education's role in combating the global crisis.

A press conference was held on Saturday, November 26, 2024, to announce the first art festival and second scientific conference on antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic stewardship. The event, attended by the Chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, infectious diseases specialists and media representatives, underscored the critical need for education and awareness to combat the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance.

As reported by Sina Media of TUMS,The conference highlighted the alarming rate of deaths worldwide due to antibiotic-resistant infections, exceeding 5 million annually.

The Chancellor of TUMS emphasized the importance of education and awareness as fundamental pillars in preventing and controlling the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance.

He warned that the consequences of antimicrobial resistance include increased mortality rates, longer hospital stays, and higher healthcare costs.

Dr. Raeeskarami highlighted the alarming rate of deaths worldwide due to antibiotic-resistant infections, exceeding 5 million annually.

The conference highlighted the need for a multi-faceted approach to combat antimicrobial resistance, involving education, awareness, and policy changes.

Dr. Minoo Mohraz, Professor of infectious diseases highlighted the alarming trend of antibiotic overuse in Iran and its potential consequences for future generations.

She pinpointed that the excessive and often inappropriate use of antibiotics, particularly in hospitals, is identified as a primary driver of antimicrobial resistance.

Dr Mohammadreza Salehi, Associate Professor of Infectious Disease said to the press that, “antimicrobial resistance was shown to increase healthcare costs, prolong hospital stays, and necessitate the development of expensive new antibiotics”.

The organizers announced plans for an art festival and a scientific conference to raise awareness and promote research on antimicrobial resistance.

Overall, the press conference emphasized the urgent need for global action to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of education, awareness, and collaboration in combating this crisis.
