Road Traffic Accidents, A Serious Public Health Challenge
Seminar Highlights the Urgent Need for Road Safety Measures
A Seminar commemorating the victims of road accidents was held at Sina Hospital on November 27, 2023. The event highlighted the critical role of universities in addressing this significant public health issue.
As reported by Sina Media, Dr. Seyed Reza Raeeskarami, the chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, emphasized the need for preventive measures and public awareness campaigns to reduce road accidents. He highlighted the devastating consequences of these accidents, including fatalities, injuries, and substantial economic burdens.
Global and Domestic Statistics Sound the Alarm
Dr. Raeeskarami presented alarming statistics on road accidents, both globally and in Iran. While the global average for road accident fatalities is around 15 per 100,000 people, Iran's rate is significantly higher at 26. Motorcycles were identified as a primary cause of these accidents, with a disproportionate impact on low-income and middle-income groups.
The Role of Universities in Raising Awareness
Dr. Raeeskarami emphasized the crucial role of universities in educating the public and raising awareness about road safety. He cited the successful implementation of seatbelt laws as an example of how societal behavior can be changed through systematic planning and education.
Practical Suggestions for Managing the Crisis
The chancellor proposed the establishment of a high-level government body dedicated to road safety. He suggested that a coordinated approach, similar to the successful national COVID-19 response, could effectively address the issue.
Dr. Raeeskarami also stressed the importance of continuous monitoring and comprehensive programs to reduce accidents. He called for a concerted effort from all relevant agencies and organizations.
A Brighter Future
Dr. Raeeskarami expressed hope that by adopting a scientific and management-oriented approach, Iran could significantly reduce road accident fatalities and leverage the capabilities of universities to improve public health.
Traffic Accidents: A Serious Health Crisis in Iran
Dr. Mohammadtaghi Talebian, the president of Sina Hospital, highlighted that road accidents are the leading cause of death among 5-29-year-olds globally, according to a 2021 WHO report. He emphasized the disproportionate impact of these accidents on low and middle-income countries like Iran.
Dr. Talebian discussed the effectiveness of measures such as seatbelt use, speed limits, child safety seats, and helmet use, as recommended by the World Health Organization. However, he stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration for the success of these measures.
Strengthening Networks for Health and Development
Dr. Abbas Vosoughi Moghaddam, the head of the Health and Food Security Secretariat at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration between different sectors and the public. He highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing public health issues, including road safety.
