Liver Transplantation in Iran is Qualitatively as Good as those of Leading Centers in the World, Says TUMS Chancellor

TUMSPR: The Head of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Diseases Research Center in TUMS says liver transplantation in Iran is qualitatively as good as the ones carried out in leading centers in the world.

Duringthe Second Hepatobiliary Diseases and Liver Transplantation Congress held in Imam Khomeini Teaching Hospital, affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), on October 9 and 10, 2013, Chacellor Dr. Ali Jafarian said in an interview that liver transplantation in Iran was qualitatively as good as the ones carried out in leading centers in the world.

The Head of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Diseases Research Center added that 64 liver transplants had been done in the Hospital during 2012 and the figure would mount to more than 70 in 2013.

On the access to drugs for patients undergoing liver transplantation, Jafarian said despite some shortages there were not serious problems in providing the needed medications for such patients.

Introducing other liver transplantation centers in Iran including the one in Shiraz, in Kerman and in Taleghani Hospital in Tehran, Jafarian said Imam Khomini Hospital was the only center capable of doing multiple organ transplantation due to the existance of different specialty groups.

On the survival of liver transplant recepients, Jafarian said the one-year survival rate was greater than 90 percent and three-year rate was still greater than 80 percent in the Hospital.
