TUMS to Draw the Road Map for Diabetes Research

TUMSPR News: In a news conference, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani informed about the efforts undertaken to draw the road map for diabetes research on November 10, 2012.

In a news conference held at Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute, affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Chancellor Bagher Larijani informed about the efforts undertaken to draw the road map for diabetes research on November 10, 2012.

Citing the prevalence of diabetes in the country and the world, the head of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute said 53% of mortalities are related to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases and nearly 285 million people are living with diabetes and it is estimated the figure will mount to 400 million in about 17 years. He also said that one out of ten would have diabetes in the next few years and many would experience renal and ophthalmic complications due to poor diabetes control.

Mentioning that 60% of people in Tehran do not have satisfactory physical activity, Dr. Larijani said, 300,000 years are lost due to diabetes each year and about $750 million will be spent on the disease each year; direct cost $590 million and indirect cost more than $153 million).
 

Reminding the establishment of Diabetes Research Network last year, Chancellor Larijani said the University was preparing Diabetes Research Road Map to direct research on the disease in the country and prevent duplicate activities.

On educating patients, the Chancellor said a virtual clinic has been launched by the Institute and they will have access to useful information on the disease at this website.

He also said “irandiabex” website has been launched to provide access to research projects, articles, dissertations, etc and nearly 2487 articles and 726 dissertations are available there.

On the undertakings of the Institute, the Chancellor said 175 national projects have been completed there and 120 brochures on the disease have been published so far for the public. Thirty-five seminars have also been held for medical professionals in the Institute, he further added.

Chamcellor Larijani also said a Diabetes Congress will be held in Imam Hospital on 13th and 14th of November, 2012 and diabetes alarm bell will be rung in schools by the help of “Radio Salamat”, a health advocate service.
