Third International Congress on the Latest Medical Research Achievements Kick Starts in TUMS
TUMSPR News: The third International Congress on the Latest Molecular and Clinical Medical Research Achievements started at Imam Khomeini Hospital on November 17, 2012. The congress will this time focus on the History of Medicine and Medical Ethics
The third International Congress on the Latest Molecular and Clinical Medical Research Achievements started at Imam Khomeini Hospital affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on November 17, 2012. This theme of the congress this year will be the History of Medicine and Medical Ethics ion Iran.
At the opening speech, Professor Alireza Ranjbar, the chairman of the Congress who is from Germany, said the International Professor Alireza Yalda Foundation was established by a number of Iranian-born researchers and medical professors who live abroad to treasure and perpetuate the name of one of the most prominent scientific figures in Iran in 2009.
Justifying the need for the current theme of the congress, Dr. Ranjbar said the remarkable advances in the field of biotechnology and molecular and cellular medicine have not only provided a better understanding into the mechanisms of diseases, but they also have raised ethical concerns regarding research and the use of their findings in patients; therefore this congress strives to provide the latest achievements in research and discuss the ethical challenges.
Dr. Mehrnaz Rasoulinezhad, the secretary of the congress, also said the findings of more than 50 domestic and foreign research papers with an ethical orientation would be presented in this four-day long congress and different awards would be given to the best in the young researchers, innovative researchers and senior professors and cultural categories.
On the importance of the congress, Dr. Moslem Bahadori, the Head of TUMS Alumni Office, said it was unique as it was held by faculties from foreign countries, it was in the appreciation of a true medical professor and it helped a closer collaboration among scientist inside and outside the country. Thanking the efforts of Dr. Ranjbar and those of Chancellor Larijani in helping establish the Foundation, Dr. Bahadori reminded that stronger scientific communication among university graduates and the University, benefiting from the talents and abilities of the graduates for the promotion of the institute, and comprehensive social and welfare support of the alumni, all were the major goals of TUMS Alumni Office.
Dr. Shams Shariat Torbaghan, the head of National Museum of the History of Medicine, which is affiliated to TUMS, welcomed the University’s ambition in establishing both its Alumni Office and the Museum as the evidence indicated the history of medicine went back to 500 to 900 B.C. and this finding needed through inspection. He believed, having been established by Chancellor Larijani in 2001, the museum was not representative of the culture and history of medicine in Iran and it had to be extensively expanded to record, organize and maintain the information and evidence on the history of medicine.
Thanking the efforts of Prof. Ranjbar, Chancellor Larijani, belived one reason for the prosperity of the University was the presence of professors like Dr. Shams Shariat Torbagha, Alireza Yalda, and Aghighi who show the way to the students.
Chancellor Larijani said the University has been able to produce nearly 40% of the scientific output among all medical universities despite all challenges it faced and its future development was dependant on the leadership of its faculties and its scientific map.
Expressing his approval of the educational and research growths in the university that had place the University atop peer universities, Chancellor Larijani said the institute had to be more active in patenting its large scientific output in medical and non-medical fields. He finally thanked all the faculties, students and staff who help the university progress.
