TUMS the First to Unveil its Scientific Map among 44 Peer Institutes

TUMSPR News: Health Minister, Dr. Marzieh Vahid-dastjerdy, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani unveil the institute’s scientific map, the first of its kind among 44 peer universities and second only to the state’s in the health sector on November 13, 2011.

In a meeting held to honor and grant 31 top subspecialty and 39 specialty graduates, 21 heads of subspecialty wards, 24 heads and deputies of specialty departments and 9 heads of research centers for the year 2011, Dr. Marzieh Vahid-dastjerdy, the Iranian Health Minister, and TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani unveiled the institute’s scientific map on November 13, 2011. This map which is the fruit of hard work for the past four years worked out parallel to the preparation of the state’s map in the health sector is the first of its kind among 44 peer state-run universities.

Describing the undertaken efforts, TUMS Chancellor said by adopting the map, the University would have a clear outline for its educational, research, treatment and cultural activities. He added that the University had to take more solid steps to turn to a scientific institute of excellence for post-graduation studies, excellence for rendering health services including [prevention], diagnostic or treatment.

On the educational achievements of the University the Chancellor added that 18 specialty fields, 25 fellowships, 8 masters and 7 bachelor’s degrees had been created in the university in the past 5 years.

He added that 54% of the specialty and 60% of subspecialty ranks had been taken by TUMS graduates in 2011 and more than 100 educational development projects were running in the University.

On achieving 42% of the positions among top research centers of Iran, he said the University had gained the first rank in research among medical universities in Iran for the 9th year in a row.

Chancellor Larijani also informed about the completion of the building of the largest medical sciences library, 10000 square meters, in the University to help researchers and educators more easily access scholarly material.

Later, the Minister of Health congratulated the graduates who had passed this year’s board exams and heads of wards, departments and research centers of the university. He also congratulated Dr. Larijani for being among top 5 scientists in endocrinology and metabolism announced recently by Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

Comparing the scientific output of universities, the Minister said the University was a model for other similar universities. She added that the Ministry’s approach was the health of all Iranians which has been defined as an essential need in the constitution.

Dr. Vahid-dastjerdi said 25% of the responsibility for the Iranians was for the Ministry of Health, 50% of health indices were related to social health and the remaining 25% were related to genetic, biologic and environmental factors. She concluded that health expenditure was not a cost but an investment and research in the past 100—125 years had shown that health had a direct relationship with financial prosperity but a reverse relationship was not possible.
